CHARLESTON- The New York Yankees announced Monday that Charleston RiverDogs catcher Jeff Nutt has been placed on the restricted list effective immediately. Catcher Chase Weems has been transferred to the RiverDogs from the Gulf Coast Yankees roster to keep Charleston at 25 players.
Nutt, the Yankees’ 25th round selection in this June’s draft, has appeared in eight games for the RiverDogs hitting .333 (4-for-12) with one double and one RBI. The former University of Arkansas standout missed nearly half of the 2008 NCAA season with the Razorbacks due to an upper-body injury, but still managed to hit .265 with five home runs and 20 RBI.
Richard “Chase” Weems joins Charleston from the GCL Yankees after being drafted in the sixth round in the 2007 Draft out of Columbus High School in Columbus, Ga. Due to persistent illness, this is the 6’2” backstop’s first professional season, since he did not sign his professional contract in time last year.
After enjoying a phenomenal high school career in which he hit .542 during his senior campaign to lead the Hornets the Class 3-A state semifinals, Weems was hitting .227 in 28 GCL games with one home run, 10 RBI and seven runs scored.
